Not all of
Australia's animals are so unusual. For a study in sheer animal cunning it would
be difficult to surpass the dingo (also known by the aboriginal word
"warrigal"), an animal very similar in appearance to the domestic dog. The dingo
is the killer of the outback. It hunts kangaroos, wallabies, rabbits, and ground
birds, and has a special taste for echidna. It also runs down and kills sheep
and cattle. The dingo carries a bounty on its head, and in Queensland a fence
4800 kilometres (3000-miles) long has been erected to keep it out.
Most dingoes have dark-fawn colouring with lighter shades on the sides and
underneath. The dingo mates readily with sheep dogs and other breeds. It hunts
by night, usually in packs, and is believed to migrate over great distances to
seek more food.
